Naturally Aspirated Engine Vs Turbocharger Engine
In an automobile size of the engine(Bore & stroke) doesn't always indicate how much power it is, it matters what kind of engines are operating either Naturally Aspirated Engine or Force Induction system Turbocharger Engine.
Nowadays In the auto market, most car manufacturers gradually shifting the Force induction system Turbos engine to the small engine because of more efficiency and power output even on 1 to 2 litres engine ranges on high-end variants like SUV cars and compact SUVs laterally on the petrol engine.
Forced Induction System
An engine can produce more power at the same speed if more air-fuel mixture or air force in the cylinder more air-fuel mixture higher pressure during the power stroke and higher power output. Forcing additional air-fuel mixture or air in the cylinder is called forced induction. It is one way to improve volumetric efficiency. An engine with forced induction may produce 35 to 60 per cent more than the naturally aspirated engine.
Forced induction may be provided by a supercharger or by a turbocharger. These are air pump or blower that force more air-fuel mixture or air into the engine.
Supercharger
Supercharger increases the pressure of the air-fuel mixture and supplies it to other engines at a pressure that is higher than the atmospheric pressure. The supercharger engine produces more power up to 40 percent. It also increases the torque by 40 percent at the higher altitude and also helps by increasing the density of the air fed to the engine.
In other words generally said that, the process of supply the air-fuel mixture at higher pressure is called supercharger.
Turbocharger
The turbocharger is a centrifugal air pump driven by engine exhaust gas. It forces an additional amount of air or air-fuel mixture drawn into the engine cylinder. This increase combustion pressure and engine power and also help to increase the volumetric efficiency of the engine.
Naturally Aspirated Engine
A naturally aspirated engine is a conventional traditional IC engine. This is a naturally breathe engine that takes fresh air naturally from the atmosphere and drawn into the engine cylinder through the intake (inlet) manifold open-intake valve in the intake stroke. Working on the four-stroke operation intake (suction)stroke, compression stroke, power stroke and exhaust stroke, an engine that produces power to move the vehicle. In terms of engine life, naturally aspirated engines are always longer lives and low maintenance cost as well as more reliable than the turbocharged engine.
Turbocharged Engine
An automotive engine that has a turbocharger is a power booster device that increases efficiency is all because of air by forced induction system. It forces an additional amount of air or air-fuel mixture into the engine. The turbocharger is a centrifugal air pump driven by the engine exhaust gas. which is bolted on the engine exhaust manifold. A device that increases vehicle efficiency and engine power output by forcing extra air from the atmosphere pressure compressed air into the combustion chamber. That device is known as Turbocharger, used on both petrol engine (spark-ignition engine) and diesel engine (Compression- ignition engine).
Basic Differences
The basic difference between the Naturally Aspirated engine and Turbocharged engine is:
*An engines efficiency and more power output so that produces more engine capacity performance as compared to the naturally-aspirated engine.
* Engine has more fuel efficiency and delivers good mileage over to NA.
* Low emission control because extra air taken by forced induction into the engine cylinders so that the air-fuel mixture completely burned on the combustion chamber.
* In terms of reliability and engine life, Naturally Aspirated engines more reliable and engine live longer as well as the low maintenance cost over to the turbocharged engine.
* The main drawback of a turbocharged engine is power lack (turbo lag) on acceleration especially in low rpm initial during starting time or cities drive. Now- a day Variable-geometry turbocharger used on it to minimize turbo lag. This helps to increase boost at low speed or low rpm and reduce turbo lag.
Engine Performance-wise
There is no doubt that the Turbocharged engine is power-boosting. There are several examples here in the Indian auto market. The turbocharged engine always overcomes its naturally-aspirated engine.
Let's compare, Turbocharger engine (1200 cc)1.2 Liters producing power output performance is better than around (2000 cc) or 2.Liters naturally-aspirated conventional engine.
Another example is that the three-cylinder Ford Figo new model car has around (1200 CC) 1.2liters turbo engine better power output as well as good performance compared to the Hyundai i20(old active model) car four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine.
So that, small turbocharged engine more prefer for efficiency and more power output performance over the four, six-cylinder types of heavy engines laterally on passengers cars.
